Every AI system in use today is "narrow." The dream (or fear) of a machine that can do anything a human can — "general AI" — remains hypothetical. Here’s the difference.

When to use narrow ai
"Narrow AI" describes every AI system that exists — powerful within its task (playing chess, translating text) but unable to generalise beyond it.
When to use general ai
"General AI" (AGI) describes a hypothetical system with human-like flexibility across any task. Whether and when it might arrive is genuinely debated.
