Leaning on AI can erode the very skills it helps with. Learn what to offload, what to protect, and how to keep your reasoning sharp.

Why this matters

Every tool that saves effort also removes a chance to practise. A calculator spares you arithmetic; lean on it entirely and your number sense fades. AI now offers to spare you thinking — summarising, drafting, deciding — across almost every domain at once. Convenience is real, but so is the quiet cost: skills you stop using get weaker.

The question is not whether to use AI, but which mental muscles to keep exercising so that you remain capable when the tool is wrong or absent.

Cognitive offloading

Cognitive offloading is using external aids — notes, search, calculators, AI — to reduce mental effort. It is often smart: no one memorises every phone number anymore. But offloading the core skills of a domain hollows out understanding.

The Google effect

Research on the Google effect (or "digital amnesia") shows we remember less information when we expect to be able to look it up later. We remember where to find it instead of the thing itself. AI extends this from facts to reasoning: why hold an argument in your head if a chatbot will reconstruct one on demand?

Protect the load-bearing skills

Some offloading is harmless (trivia, formatting); some is corrosive (the reasoning, writing, and judgment that define your competence). Protect the load-bearing skills by continuing to practise them unaided.

Worked example

A student uses AI to summarise every reading. Grades hold up for a while — then, on an exam that requires synthesising ideas across sources with no AI, they stumble. The summaries did the comprehension for them, so the comprehension skill never developed. Offloading the core task quietly prevented learning.

Counterexample

Offloading can also free capacity for higher-level thought. An engineer who lets AI handle boilerplate code spends more energy on architecture and trade-offs — the harder thinking. The difference is whether the tool removes drudgery or removes the very skill you are trying to build.

Case study: remembering where, not what

In a set of experiments published in 2011, Betsy Sparrow, Jenny Liu, and Daniel Wegner found that when people expected a computer to save information for them, they remembered the information itself less well — but remembered where to find it better. Later work extended the theme to reliance on smartphones and search. Applied to AI, the implication is direct: if you outsource not just facts but the act of reasoning, you may retain the ability to summon an argument while losing the ability to build one. The fix is not abstinence but intention — deciding which thinking you will still do yourself.

Common misconceptions

  • "Offloading is always lazy." Offloading routine load can be wise; offloading core skills is the risk.
  • "If AI can do it, I don't need to." Until the moment AI is wrong and you must judge it.
  • "Struggling means I'm doing it wrong." Productive struggle — desirable difficulty — is how skills grow.
  • "I'll keep the skill just by watching AI do it." Skills come from doing, not from observing.

Pick a task you'd normally hand to AI. Do a first attempt entirely unaided. Then bring in AI to critique or extend it. Notice what you learned by struggling first.
