Learning to unlearn: why updating or discarding outdated knowledge matters, how misconceptions persist, and how to change your mind well.

Why this matters

Most of learning is treated as addition: pour in more facts, more skills, more sources. But in fields that change fast — technology, medicine, your own profession — much of what you know quietly goes stale. A method that was best practice five years ago may now be wrong. Knowledge does not come with an expiry date stamped on it, so unless you actively update and discard, you keep operating on beliefs that were true once and are not anymore.

Unlearning is harder than learning, because old beliefs do not politely step aside for new ones. They linger, colour how you read new information, and reassert themselves under pressure. The person who thrives amid constant change is not the one who knows the most, but the one who can let go of what no longer holds — provisionally, honestly, and without treating every correction as a personal defeat.

Unlearning is not forgetting

Unlearning does not mean erasing a memory; it means demoting a belief or habit so a better one can take over. The old idea often remains stored, which is why it can resurface. Effective unlearning replaces — it installs a new, better-supported understanding and practises it until it becomes the default response, rather than simply trying to not think the old thought.

Why misconceptions persist

Cognitive psychology has documented that misconceptions are stubborn. A well-studied example is the continued-influence effect: information you have been told is false can keep shaping your judgments even after a clear correction, especially if it fit a tidy story. Researchers have also discussed a "backfire effect," where a correction supposedly strengthens the original false belief — but this finding is contested, and more recent studies suggest corrections usually help, if imperfectly. The safe lesson is modest: simply hearing the truth once rarely fully overwrites a misconception, so updating takes deliberate effort.

Provisional belief and intellectual humility

The antidote is to hold beliefs provisionally — to attach a level of confidence to what you think and to know in advance what evidence would change your mind. This is the practical face of intellectual humility: recognising that your current understanding may be incomplete or wrong, and treating that as normal rather than shameful. Humility here is not believing nothing or rating every opinion equally; it is proportioning confidence to evidence and staying open to revision.

Worked example

Suppose you learned years ago that you should drink eight glasses of water a day, full stop. You encounter a careful summary explaining that the specific "eight glasses" figure is not well grounded and that fluid needs vary by person, food, and climate. Unlearning here is not just noting the correction; it is replacing the rule. You state your new position with appropriate confidence — "hydration matters, but the fixed number was never solid" — name what would move you further (strong new evidence), and, crucially, watch for the old rule creeping back the next time someone repeats it. That vigilance is the work, because the discarded belief is still in memory.

Counterexample

Unlearning can go wrong in the opposite direction: treating openness as an excuse to abandon well-supported knowledge whenever a confident voice challenges it. Someone who "unlearns" that vaccines are safe because of a viral post has not updated on evidence; they have discarded a strong consensus for a weak claim. Provisional belief does not mean every idea is up for grabs equally. The skill is asymmetric: you loosen your grip in proportion to the quality of the new evidence, holding firm where the evidence is strong and revising readily where it is thin. Humility without standards is just gullibility.

Case study: the persistence of misconceptions and the debated backfire effect

Science education research has long documented how tenacious misconceptions are. Studies of physics students — famously using instruments like the Force Concept Inventory developed by David Hestenes and colleagues around 1992 — show that many learners cling to intuitive but incorrect ideas about motion even after formal instruction, unless teaching directly confronts the misconception. Adding correct information on top of a wrong model often is not enough; the wrong model has to be challenged head-on.

A related and instructive story comes from political psychology. In 2010, Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler reported a "backfire effect," in which corrections sometimes appeared to strengthen the false belief they targeted. The finding spread widely. But subsequent research, including larger studies by Thomas Wood and Ethan Porter around 2019, struggled to reproduce a general backfire effect and found that corrections usually nudge beliefs in the right direction. This is a live, contested area, and the honest summary is that corrections generally help but rarely fully erase a misconception — which is exactly why deliberate unlearning matters.
