Learning amid abundant information: why access is not understanding, how easy lookup breeds an illusion of knowledge, and using AI without outsourcing thought.
Nearly every fact humanity has recorded is a few seconds away. This is a genuine gift, and it quietly changes what it feels like to know something. When an answer is always retrievable, having retrieved it and understanding it start to feel like the same experience. They are not.
The skill that matters now is no longer accumulating information — that problem is solved. It is judging what is worth internalising, resisting the sense of competence that easy access manufactures, and using powerful tools without letting them do the part of the thinking that was supposed to be yours.
Being able to find a fact is not the same as being able to use it. Understanding is a structure of connected ideas that lets you reason, predict, and notice when something is wrong. A search result is a single node handed to you out of context; it sits in the world, not in your head, and cannot combine with your other knowledge until you have actually learned it.
This is why a person can look up the same definition five times and still not understand the concept. The information arrived; the structure never got built.
Humans have always stored knowledge outside their own heads — in books, in experts, in each other. Psychologists call this transactive memory: remembering where or who to ask rather than the thing itself. Cognitive offloading is the modern, frictionless version, where the answer is a search box away.
Offloading is not inherently bad — no one memorises the phone book. The danger is offloading the wrong things: the core ideas of a field that you need resident in memory to think fluently, reason quickly, and even recognise what to look up.
People routinely believe they understand things far better than they do. Asked to rate how well they grasp how a zipper or a toilet works, most rate themselves highly — until asked to explain it step by step, at which point the confidence collapses. This is the illusion of explanatory depth, and abundant information amplifies it: fluent access to explanations feels like possessing them.
You want to understand how a recommendation algorithm decides what to show you.
The lookup was identical. The difference was whether you did the work of building structure after retrieving.
The answer is not to memorise everything and shun tools. That would be its own failure — slow, and wasteful of a real advantage.
A physicist does not memorise every constant; they look them up and spend their memory on the concepts that let them use the constants. The goal is not maximum memorisation but the right division of labour: internalise the load-bearing ideas that make thinking fluent, offload the peripheral details, and keep clear which is which. Refusing all tools is as much a mistake as leaning on them for everything.
In 2011, Betsy Sparrow, Jenny Liu and Daniel Wegner published "Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips" in Science. Across several experiments, participants who typed statements into a computer remembered the information less well when they expected the computer to save it — and better when told it would be erased.
In a further experiment, people were better at recalling where a fact had been stored (which folder) than the fact itself. The researchers described this as a form of transactive memory: when we expect information to remain accessible, we remember the path to it rather than the content. The study does not show that search makes us stupid; it shows our memory adapts to what it can rely on being available — which is exactly why deciding what to internalise has to be deliberate.
Look something up, then close the source and explain it aloud or in writing from memory. Note exactly where you stall. Reopen the source only to fix that specific gap, then explain again. You are converting access into structure.
Think Like a Maester: Knowing where to find an answer is useful; mistaking it for knowing the answer is the trap of the information age.
Information is abundant; understanding still has to be built, one connected structure at a time. Easy access manufactures a feeling of knowing that outruns the reality, and our memory quietly offloads what it expects to stay available — as the Google-effect research shows. Use search and AI to reach material fast, then do the irreplaceable part yourself: explain it, connect it, and decide deliberately what deserves a place in your own head.
