Few scientific ideas have shaped real lives as directly as intelligence testing. Test scores have decided school placements, job prospects, military roles, and even, in darker chapters, who was allowed to immigrate or have children. A concept that sounds abstract has carried enormous practical weight.
That power makes clear thinking essential. If we cannot agree what intelligence is, we should be cautious about any number that claims to capture it. Understanding where these tests came from, what they do measure, and where they mislead helps you read claims about ability with the skepticism they deserve.
Most people sense what intelligence means, yet experts have never fully agreed on a definition. Common threads include the capacity to learn, reason, solve problems, and adapt to new situations. Because these are broad, any test must choose which aspects to emphasise, and that choice quietly shapes what the resulting score can and cannot tell us.
Early practical testing measured a child's performance against typical performance for each age, yielding a mental age. The intelligence quotient, or IQ, originally expressed mental age relative to chronological age, later rescaled so that scores are distributed around an average of 100. IQ is best understood as a person's standing relative to others on a particular test, not a fixed physical quantity.
Charles Spearman observed in the early 1900s that people who do well on one mental task tend to do well on others, and proposed a general factor he called g. Others have argued that intelligence is plural. Howard Gardner's 1983 theory of multiple intelligences describes distinct domains such as linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, and interpersonal ability. Gardner's view is influential in education but is criticised by many psychologists for lacking strong empirical support, while g remains statistically robust yet arguably narrow.
Tests can reflect the culture that wrote them, so questions may favour certain backgrounds and disadvantage others. Historically, results were used to justify discriminatory immigration and sterilisation policies. Recognising this history is part of using such tools responsibly rather than a reason to romanticise or wholly dismiss them.
Suppose two students score identically on a standard IQ test. It is tempting to conclude they have equal ability. But one may have grown up with the vocabulary and test-taking familiarity the test assumes, while the other met such questions for the first time. The score summarises performance on that test on that day; it does not by itself reveal potential, effort, or the many capacities the test never sampled.
A high g score is often treated as a guarantee of success, yet it plainly is not. Many capable performers succeed through persistence, social skill, or specialised talent that broad tests barely touch, while some high scorers struggle in domains scores never measured. This is exactly why plural views of intelligence gained an audience, even where their evidence is contested.
In the early 1900s the French government asked Alfred Binet, working with Théodore Simon, to identify schoolchildren who needed extra help. Around 1905 they produced the Binet-Simon scale, a set of graded tasks measuring reasoning and judgement rather than mere schooling. Binet intended it as a practical diagnostic tool and warned against treating the score as a fixed, innate measure of a child's worth. Yet when the approach crossed to the United States and became the Stanford-Binet, some proponents used it to rank people and support eugenic policies, precisely the misuse Binet had cautioned against. The same tool served both a humane and a harmful purpose depending on who wielded it.

Intelligence resists a single agreed definition, so every test embeds choices about what to count. Practical measurement began with Binet and Simon's early graded tasks and led to IQ, a relative standing rather than a fixed quantity. Spearman's g captures the tendency for mental abilities to correlate, while Gardner's multiple intelligences offers a broader but contested picture. Throughout, testing has been both useful and dangerous: a tool that has helped children get support and, when misused, has justified real harm. Reading any claim about intelligence well means asking what the test measured, what it left out, and who is using the result.
