A higher monthly payment clears the debt faster and slashes total interest. Figures are estimates; educational only, not financial advice.
Why interest makes debt stubborn
Each month, interest is added to what you still owe, so part of every payment just covers interest rather than reducing the balance. The higher the rate, the more of your payment is eaten this way. Paying above the minimum is powerful precisely because it attacks the balance directly, cutting the interest charged in every future month.

Frequently asked questions
- How long will it take to pay off my debt?
- It depends on the balance, the interest rate, and how much you pay each month. Enter those three numbers and this tool estimates the number of months to clear the debt and the total interest you will pay.
- Why does a small extra payment help so much?
- Because interest is charged on the remaining balance every month. Paying more than the minimum shrinks the balance faster, so less interest accrues — which is why even a modest increase can cut both the payoff time and the total interest dramatically.
- What if my payment barely covers the interest?
- If your monthly payment is at or below the monthly interest, the balance never falls and the debt is never repaid — the tool flags this. The fix is to pay more than the monthly interest so the balance can actually decrease.
