Each value is multiplied by its weight; the total is divided by the sum of the weights — so heavier items pull the average toward them.
Not every value counts equally
A final exam worth 40% of a grade shouldn’t count the same as a quiz worth 5%. Weights capture that: each value pulls on the average in proportion to its weight, so the result reflects what actually matters most.

- What is a weighted average?
- A weighted average lets some values count for more than others. You multiply each value by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total of the weights. When every weight is equal, it reduces to the ordinary average.
- How do I calculate it?
- Weighted average = Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). For grades of 90 (3 credits), 80 (4 credits), and 95 (2 credits): (270 + 320 + 190) ÷ 9 = 86.7. This tool does the arithmetic as you type.
- Where are weighted averages used?
- Course grades weighted by credit hours or assignment worth, average prices weighted by quantity, survey results weighted by group size, and portfolio returns weighted by amount invested — anywhere the items aren’t equally important.
