Every day you scroll past more claims than any person could check. Most are harmless, some are wrong, and a few are wrong on purpose. The cost of believing a false claim is no longer private: people share what they believe, and a single misleading post can shape how thousands vote, spend, or treat their health. The correction, when it comes, rarely reaches everyone the rumour did. Learning to pause before you accept or forward a claim is one of the highest-return habits a thinker can build, because the effort of checking is small and the cost of being confidently wrong in public is large.
Both words describe false or misleading information; the difference is intent. Misinformation is false content spread by people who believe it is true — a worried parent forwarding bad health advice. Disinformation is false content created or spread deliberately to deceive, for profit, politics, or influence. The same image can be both at once: crafted as disinformation, then passed along as misinformation by everyone who trusts it. Intent changes the response — a mistaken friend needs a gentle correction, an organised campaign needs exposure.
False claims are often built to be shared: novel, emotionally charged, and simple, while the truth is frequently dull, complicated, and slow to arrive. A correction also has to travel further than the original — reaching the same people, overcoming the first impression, and fighting the discomfort of admitting a mistake. This is why the retraction rarely catches the rumour, and why refusing to share until you have checked does more good than any correction posted afterwards.
Three quick checks defuse most bad claims. Check the source — who is telling you this, and what do they gain? Check the date — old stories are constantly recirculated as if they were breaking news. Check the original context — a genuine quote or photo can be stripped of the facts that change its meaning. For images, a reverse image search reveals where a picture first appeared. The most powerful habit is lateral reading: rather than studying a suspicious page itself, open new tabs and see what independent sources say about it. Fact-checkers judge a site from the outside, not from within.
Photos have always been croppable; now video and audio can be synthesised. A deepfake uses machine learning to make a person appear to say or do something they never did. You cannot reliably spot these by eye, so the defence is not visual scrutiny but provenance: where did this clip originate, who published it first, and do independent outlets confirm it?
A friend forwards a dramatic photo of a flooded city, captioned as this week's storm. Before resharing, you run a reverse image search. The picture turns up in news archives from a different country three years earlier. The image is real, but the claim attached to it is not — a textbook case of true media carrying a false context. You reply with the link instead of the panic.
"Do your own research" sounds like exactly this lesson's advice, yet done poorly it backfires. Someone who distrusts experts, types a loaded question into a search engine, and clicks only the results that confirm their fear has not researched — they have shopped for agreement. Good research widens the sources you consult and includes the ones you would rather were wrong; bad research narrows them until only comfort remains. The instinct to verify is right; the method is what fails.
A large study published in the journal Science analysed roughly 126,000 news stories shared on Twitter over more than a decade. The researchers reported that false stories, as judged by independent fact-checking organisations, spread significantly farther and faster than true ones, and that the effect was driven by people rather than automated bots. The explanation the authors favour is novelty: false stories tended to be more surprising, and surprising things get shared. The finding is specific to that platform and period and should not be stretched into a law of all media, but it is a well-documented illustration of a pattern later work has often echoed.

Misinformation is false content spread in good faith; disinformation is false content spread to deceive, and the two blur as a claim travels. Because falsehoods are often built to be shared, the correction rarely catches up — so the practical defence is a handful of fast habits: check who is speaking, when, and in what original context; read laterally across independent sources; and treat striking media as unverified until its origin is clear. Done honestly, research broadens what you consider; done as a hunt for comfort, it only hardens what you already believed.
