Some ideas about learning are repeated so often that they feel like common sense. You have almost certainly heard that you are a "visual learner," that we use only ten percent of our brains, or that re-reading your notes is a solid way to study. All three are wrong, and believing them quietly steers you toward methods that waste effort.
A myth is dangerous precisely because it is comfortable. It fits what you already assume and asks little of you. Learning to test a claim against evidence — rather than against how true it feels — is itself one of the most useful learning skills you can own.
The most popular myth is that each person has a fixed style — visual, auditory, or kinesthetic — and learns best when teaching matches it. This is called the meshing hypothesis. People do have preferences for how information is presented. But a preference is not a benefit: liking diagrams does not mean you remember more from them. When researchers actually test meshing, matching instruction to a supposed style does not improve learning.
Why do bad methods feel good? Because of the illusion of fluency. When you re-read a page, it becomes smooth and familiar, and that smoothness feels like understanding. It is not. Familiarity with the text is a poor guide to whether you could recall or use the idea later. Methods that feel harder — testing yourself, spacing practice out — feel worse in the moment yet produce far more durable learning.
The replacement for myths is not mystery; it is a short list of tested methods. Retrieval practice (recalling material from memory) and spaced practice (spreading study over time) consistently beat re-reading and highlighting. The best format depends on the content — you learn geography from maps and music from sound, regardless of who you are — not on a personal style label.
You have a chapter to learn for an exam. The mythical approach: decide you are a visual learner, re-read the chapter three times, and highlight the important lines. It feels productive because each pass is more fluent than the last.
The evidence-based approach: read the chapter once, close it, and write down everything you can recall. Check what you missed. Two days later, test yourself again on the gaps. You will feel less confident during this process because retrieval is effortful — but you will remember far more when it counts. Same chapter, same hours, very different result.
Debunking learning styles does not mean presentation is irrelevant. It plainly matters that a diagram of a circuit is clearer than a paragraph describing it, and that pronunciation is better taught with sound than with text.
The point is subtler: the best format is dictated by the material, and it helps everyone, not by a fixed trait that sorts learners into visual or auditory types. Rejecting the myth frees you to use whatever format the content demands, instead of forcing everything through one channel.
In 2008, psychologists Harold Pashler, Mark McDaniel, Doug Rohrer, and Robert Bjork published "Learning Styles: Concepts and Evidence" in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest. They surveyed the research and set a clear standard for what a valid test of the idea would require: learners of different styles would have to benefit from different instruction — a crossover interaction.
They found that almost no studies met that standard, and the few credible ones did not support the meshing hypothesis. Their conclusion was blunt: there is no adequate evidence that matching teaching to a learner's style improves learning, and the widespread, costly use of styles-based programmes is not justified. The idea remains popular anyway — a reminder that reach is not evidence.
List three things you currently believe about how you learn best. For each, ask one question: what evidence would show this is true, and have I ever seen it? Then replace any myth with a tested method — swap re-reading for self-testing, or a style label for the format the content actually needs.
