The protégé effect

The protégé effect is the finding that people who teach material — or even just prepare to teach it — tend to understand and remember it better than those who study only for themselves. The act of teaching forces you to organise ideas, find gaps, and put things in your own words.

Why teaching works

Teaching harnesses several proven learning mechanisms at once. It requires retrieval (pulling knowledge from memory), generation (reconstructing ideas in your own words rather than rereading), and organisation (structuring material so it makes sense to someone else). It also exposes exactly what you don't understand — you cannot teach a gap.

Expecting to teach

Remarkably, research suggests that even expecting to teach — before you actually do — changes how you study, making you organise and prioritise more effectively. The mindset of "I'll have to explain this" is itself a powerful study tool.

Worked example

Two students prepare for the same test. One studies to take it; the other studies believing they must teach the material to a classmate afterward. The second tends to structure the content more, focus on main ideas, and remember more — even if the teaching never happens. Adopting the teacher's stance sharpened their learning.

Counterexample

Teaching is not magic if done passively. Simply re-reading notes aloud to someone, or reciting memorised lines, captures little of the benefit. The gains come from the effortful parts — retrieving without looking, reorganising, answering questions, handling confusion. Teaching that avoids that effort avoids the learning too.

Case study: expecting to teach

In a 2014 study by John Nestojko, Dung Bui, Nate Kornell, and Elizabeth Bjork, students read a passage; some were told they would later be tested on it, others that they would have to teach it. Those who expected to teach recalled more of the material and organised it better — even though, in the end, everyone was simply tested and no one actually taught. The expectation alone shifted how they processed the material. This and related research on "learning by teaching" (studied by researchers such as Logan Fiorella and Richard Mayer) support a practical conclusion: adopting the goal of explaining material to someone else engages deeper, more generative study. You do not need a real student to capture much of the protégé effect — you need the teacher's mindset.

Common misconceptions

  • "You should master something fully before teaching it." Teaching while learning is how the understanding forms.
  • "Teaching only helps the student." It reliably benefits the teacher's own learning.
  • "Reading your notes aloud counts as teaching." The benefit comes from effortful retrieval and reorganisation, not recitation.
  • "You need an audience." Even expecting or pretending to teach captures much of the effect.
