How to create clear, useful learning content: manage cognitive load, use worked examples and chunking, and share knowledge that actually helps.

Why this matters

Beyond teaching one person, you can share knowledge with many by creating content — notes, guides, videos, tutorials, courses. Good learning content can help thousands of people you will never meet. But creating material that actually teaches, rather than just exists, takes more than knowing the subject; it takes understanding how people learn.

Manage cognitive load

Learners have limited working memory — they can only hold so much at once. Cognitive load theory (developed by John Sweller) warns that content overloaded with too much at once, or cluttered with irrelevant detail, overwhelms learners and blocks learning. Good content presents one idea at a time and strips away noise.

Chunk and sequence

Breaking material into small chunks and sequencing them from simple to complex lets learners build understanding step by step. Each chunk should rest on what came before. A wall of information, however accurate, teaches poorly.

Show worked examples

Especially for beginners, worked examples — fully explained solutions — are often more effective than problems alone, because novices lack the schema to learn purely by struggling. Show how something is done, then gradually shift to having the learner do it.

Clarity over polish

The most important quality of learning content is clarity, not production value. A clear hand-drawn explanation beats a slick video that confuses. Focus your effort on making the ideas land.

Worked example

Someone writes a guide to a software tool. A poor version lists every feature at once. A good version picks the handful a beginner actually needs, shows one worked example of a real task, chunks the steps, and cuts the rest. The good guide teaches more by including less — respecting the learner's limited working memory.

Counterexample

More content is not better content. A common failure is the "expert's curse": packing in everything you know, at your level, forgetting what a beginner does not yet have. Comprehensiveness can bury the essential under the exhaustive. Good learning content is ruthlessly selective, shaped by what the learner needs, not by everything the author knows.

Case study: teaching the world from a closet

A vivid example of sharing knowledge at scale is Khan Academy. Around 2004, Salman Khan began tutoring a younger cousin remotely, then posted simple explanatory videos on YouTube so others could watch too. The videos — plain voice-over on a digital blackboard, no fancy production — proved enormously popular precisely because they were clear, bite-sized, and let learners pause and repeat. Khan formally founded Khan Academy in 2008, and it has since delivered free lessons to millions worldwide. The lesson for any content creator is instructive: the videos succeeded not because they were polished but because they respected how people learn — one idea at a time, clearly explained, freely available. Clarity and generosity, more than production budget, are what make shared knowledge land.

  • "Include everything so it's comprehensive." Overload blocks learning; select ruthlessly.

Take something you'd explain to a beginner. Draft it, then cut it in half — keep only what they truly need first. Does the shorter version teach better?
