Why People Harm: The Psychology of Aggression

Why this matters

Aggression is one of the oldest puzzles in psychology because it sits at the meeting point of biology, circumstance, and learning. Blame it entirely on "human nature" and you excuse it; blame it entirely on upbringing and you miss the body's part. Neither extreme explains why the same person is calm one day and cruel the next.

Getting the causes right has practical stakes. Schools, prisons, and parents all try to reduce harmful behaviour, and their strategies depend on what they think drives it. If aggression is partly learned by watching others, then what children see adults do is not a side issue but a cause.

Core concepts

What aggression is

Psychologists usually define aggression as behaviour intended to harm another who does not want to be harmed. It comes in two broad forms. Hostile aggression is driven by anger and aims at hurting; a shove thrown in fury is an example. Instrumental aggression is a means to some other end, such as a robber using force to get money. The same act can spring from very different motives, which is why intent, not just the outcome, matters.

Biological influences

The body shapes the threshold for aggression. Genetics contributes, though no single "aggression gene" exists. Brain regions such as the amygdala are involved in threat and anger, and the prefrontal cortex helps restrain impulses. Hormones and neurotransmitters, including testosterone and serotonin, are associated with aggressive tendencies, though the links are modest and easily overstated. Biology loads the dice; it rarely dictates the throw.

Frustration and situations

The frustration-aggression hypothesis, proposed in 1939, held that being blocked from a goal produces a drive toward aggression. In its original strong form it claimed frustration always leads to aggression, which proved too sweeping. Leonard Berkowitz revised it: frustration creates a readiness for aggression, especially when aggressive cues are present in the situation, and it may be expressed, redirected, or suppressed. Heat, pain, crowding, and provocation all raise the odds.

Learning aggression

Much aggression is learned. Through social learning, people acquire behaviour by watching others and noting the consequences. If aggression is rewarded, or if a respected model uses it and goes unpunished, observers become more likely to copy it. This is why the behaviour of parents, peers, and admired figures matters so much.

Worked example

A child grows up seeing a parent get their way by shouting and slamming doors, with no cost and often a reward. At school the child does the same. There is no need to invoke a violent temperament: the behaviour was modelled, seen to succeed, and imitated. Change the models and the incentives, and the behaviour can change too.

Counterexample

Frustration does not force aggression. Someone stuck in a delayed queue may fume, joke, distract themselves, or quietly help. This is exactly why the original frustration-aggression hypothesis was softened: frustration raises the readiness for aggression, but whether it appears depends on cues, habits, and self-control. Many frustrated people never lash out at all.

Case study: Bandura's Bobo doll experiments

In a series of studies from 1961 to 1963 at Stanford, Albert Bandura and colleagues tested whether children would imitate aggression they merely watched. Nursery-age children observed an adult who either attacked a large inflatable "Bobo" doll — hitting it, kicking it, and striking it with a mallet while shouting distinctive phrases — or behaved calmly. Later, given their own chance to play, children who had seen the aggressive model reproduced those specific acts far more often, sometimes inventing new attacks of their own. Later variants showed that seeing the model rewarded or punished changed how much children imitated, and that filmed and even cartoon models produced similar effects. The studies are a foundation of social learning theory. Read carefully, they show that novel aggressive acts can be learned by observation in a controlled setting; they do not, on their own, prove that watching violence causes real-world violence.

Common misconceptions

  • "Aggression is purely instinctive." Biology sets thresholds, but frustration, situations, and learning all shape whether aggression appears.
  • "Frustration always leads to aggression." The original claim was revised; frustration creates readiness, not certainty.
  • "The Bobo doll study proves media makes people violent." It demonstrated imitation of a novel act in a lab, which is narrower than real-world violence.
  • "All aggression comes from anger." Instrumental aggression can be cool and calculated, used as a means to an end.
