The better you know something, the harder it becomes to remember what it felt like not to know it. This is the curse of knowledge: once an idea is fluent in your mind, you unconsciously assume it is obvious to everyone else. You skip the steps that now feel too basic to mention, and you reach for the shorthand that saves you time but leaves your listener stranded.
This is not a failure of intelligence or kindness. It is a predictable bias, and it explains a great deal of bad teaching, confusing documentation, and meetings where the expert leaves satisfied while everyone else leaves lost. Understanding the curse is the first move toward explaining well, because you cannot correct for a distortion you cannot see.
When you understand a topic deeply, the individual steps of reasoning collapse into a single fluent whole. What took you months to learn now feels like one obvious thought. The problem is that your listener still has to climb every step you have forgotten you climbed. The curse of knowledge is the invisible gap between your compressed understanding and their unpacked need.
The curse shows up in specific, catchable habits. You use jargon without defining it. You skip intermediate steps because they feel too obvious to state. You answer a question that is three levels ahead of where the listener actually is. You say a thing is "simple" or "just" done a certain way, which quietly signals that anyone confused should feel embarrassed. Each symptom is a place where your fluency outran your audience.
You cannot fully unlearn what you know, but you can compensate. Picture a specific person who does not share your background and explain to them, not to an abstract audience. Define terms the first time you use them. Ask the listener to explain the idea back to you, or to apply it to a small new case, rather than asking the useless question "Does that make sense?" People almost always say yes to that, whether or not it is true.
Imagine a database engineer telling a new colleague, "Just add an index and the query will stop doing a full scan." To the engineer this is a complete instruction. To the newcomer, "index," "query," and "full scan" are three unexplained ideas stacked on top of each other. A cursed explanation stops there. A better one names one concrete image first: an index is like the alphabetical tab section in a large address book, so you can jump to the R names instead of reading every page. Then it connects that image to the specific task. Same expertise, but the steps are unpacked rather than compressed.
Overcorrecting is also a failure. If you explain every term from first principles to a room of specialists, you waste their time and signal that you have misjudged them. The goal is not maximum simplicity. It is calibration: matching the number of unpacked steps to what this particular audience already knows. An explanation that would rescue a beginner can insult an expert. The curse of knowledge is solved by knowing your audience, not by dumbing everything down for everyone.
In 1990, Elizabeth Newton ran an experiment as part of her psychology dissertation at Stanford University. Participants were assigned to one of two roles. "Tappers" were given a list of well-known songs, such as "Happy Birthday," and asked to tap out the rhythm on a table. "Listeners" tried to name the tune from the tapping alone.
Before the listeners guessed, tappers were asked to predict how often they would be understood. On average they estimated around 50 percent. The actual success rate was far lower, on the order of a few percent. The tappers heard the full song in their heads while tapping and could not imagine the listeners hearing only disconnected knocks. The study was later popularized by Chip and Dan Heath in their 2007 book "Made to Stick" as a vivid illustration of the curse of knowledge: the tapper's inner music is exactly the knowledge that makes the message feel obvious and blinds them to how little the listener receives.
Pick a song everyone knows and tap its rhythm on a table for a friend without humming. Notice the strong pull to believe they must recognize it. Then explain a topic you know well to someone new and, at the end, ask them to teach it back to you in one sentence. The gap between what you meant and what they repeat is the curse of knowledge made visible.

The curse of knowledge is the difficulty of imagining not knowing what you already know. It makes experts skip steps, lean on jargon, and misjudge how much their listeners are receiving. Newton's tappers and listeners study, popularized in "Made to Stick," shows the effect sharply: tappers heard a whole song where listeners heard only knocks. You cannot erase your own knowledge, but you can compensate by explaining to a specific beginner, defining terms, unpacking steps, and asking people to apply or restate the idea. Done well, this is calibration rather than oversimplification, matching your explanation to what your particular audience already knows.
