Same ideas, different order, clear or baffling

Structure is not decoration. It is what determines whether the thinking transfers.

Try it

Reorder It

"I\u2019m recommending we change suppliers. Three reasons..."

Which openings help the listener?

Order is not neutral. The order you discovered something is rarely the order to explain it.

Tell well-structured openings from disorganised ones.

Lead with it, then support it. Bury it and the listener spends the whole message wondering where it’s going — and forgets the detail by the time they find out.
Journalism, a century ago

The inverted pyramid

Most important facts first, detail in descending order. Driven by telegraph lines that failed mid-transmission and editors who cut from the bottom.

The reader benefit was larger: whenever they stop, they have the most important thing. Assume your audience may stop at any point.

Nuance

Careful

Common misconception

Good structure transfers thinking; it cannot create it. A beautifully organised empty argument is still empty.
